Silent by Nature: Geiranger Fjordservice Introduces “Geirangerfjord 3”

Geiranger, Norway – [Summer 2026] — Geiranger Fjordservice is proud to announce a major investment in the future of sustainable tourism with the launch of Geirangerfjord 3, a 46-metre hybrid-powered catamaran purpose-built to operate within the strict environmental requirements of the UNESCO-inscribed Geirangerfjord.

Locally built and constructed from advanced carbon-fibre materials, Geirangerfjord 3 represents a new generation of fjord vessels—designed to protect the landscape it explores while offering guests an unparalleled connection to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments.

Designed for a World Heritage Fjord

Every element of Geirangerfjord 3 has been carefully engineered to meet and exceed the zero-emission requirements now shaping operations in Norway’s World Heritage fjords.

Its advanced hybrid propulsion system allows the vessel to travel silently on electric power, dramatically reducing emissions and noise. This ensures minimal impact on the fjord’s fragile ecosystem—while enhancing the guest experience through quiet, immersive exploration.

“Operating in a UNESCO-protected fjord carries a responsibility,” said [Helle Jensen, Managing Director] of Geiranger Fjordservice. “With Geirangerfjord 3, we are investing not only in new technology, but in the long-term protection of the fjord itself.”

An Immersive Fjord Experience—In Silence

With capacity for up to 280 guests, Geirangerfjord 3 has been designed to maximise comfort, visibility, and connection to nature in all seasons.

Guests can experience the fjord:

  • From the panoramic indoor lounge, offering warm, comfortable seating year-round
  • On the open upper deck, surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and raw Nordic wilderness
  • In near-silence, allowing the natural sounds of the fjord to take centre stage

The result is a deeply authentic, respectful way to experience Geirangerfjord—one that allows nature to speak for itself.

Year-Round, Low-Impact Operations

Geirangerfjord 3 will operate all year round, serving the critically acclaimed Ålesund–Geiranger Fjord Cruise, as well as Sightseeing tours within the Geirangerfjord.

The vessel’s efficiency, durability, and hybrid technology ensure reliable operations across seasons, while supporting Norway’s wider ambition to lead the world in sustainable maritime tourism.

Continuing a Tradition—Shaping the Future

Operating in the Geirangerfjord since 1969, Geiranger Fjordservice is the original sightseeing and fjord-cruise specialist in the region. For more than five decades, the company has connected visitors with the fjord’s dramatic landscapes—while continuously evolving to meet new environmental and societal expectations.

Geirangerfjord 3 continues this proud tradition, combining the heritage of fjord service-boats with innovative technologies that allow guests to experience the fjord in a way that is responsible, future-focused, and worthy of its UNESCO status.

A Sustainable Journey Through a Living Landscape

With the introduction of Geirangerfjord 3, Geiranger Fjordservice reaffirms its commitment to offering sustainability-focused experiences—ensuring that future generations can continue to discover the magic of the Geirangerfjord, just as it is today.
